This film in my watchlist for a while now. I thought I should watch it when my brother is not there. So, I was waiting for the right time. But, you know Lockdown came along and I had to watch it with my brother despite the risk of getting caught while watching a NC-16 film. I was curious about the film because of the genre and the director. The guy is Mysskin and he is a goddamn genius when it comes to thrillers. They work as thrillers excellently but they are a work of art as you see something unique in each of his films. For example, Thupparivaalan aka Detective, his own version of Sherlock Holmes. It is a good detective thriller anyway but if we observe deeply, you should see some easter eggs, some insane storylines that should not make sense but they make complete sense in the film and much more. So, how is the film anyway? Here is my take on Psycho:
Psycho is a 2020 psycho-thriller drama starring Udayanidhi Stalin, Aditi Rao Hydari and Nithya Menon in lead roles. It is directed by Mysskin. The story revolves Angoolimal, a serial killer who abducts Daahini. Now, it is time for his lover Gautham and an ex-cop Kamala Das (Both Handicappped) to rescue her and stop him from committing such crimes.
The screenplay is mixed for me with the positives more than the negatives. Let me begin with the positives. The unique touches of Mysskin are in display in this film as well. Every character in this film has atleast one flaw. None of them are perfect. If the lead is blind, the ex-cop is a living rock. The only perfect character, the heroine is locked in the entire film. The story itself inspired from the story of Angoolimal and Lord Buddha has some good tension and intensity. The violence and gore in the film is very extreme as expected. The character of the psycho and his backstory too is actually relevant as it discusses child abuse. If we get to the negatives, the film is longer than it deserves to be. It actually bored me in patches along the film. Some of the investigation part does not feel right. This leads to some repetition as we just see murder after murder. Some minor details in the film bothered me. Like why is not everybody doubting on the hero? Perhaps I am watching so many films, I cannot get them out of my head. Also, the final 2 minutes does not make sense. Overall, this film is a very good psychological thriller if we ignore the minor details.
The acting of the film is mixed as well. I had seen Udayanidhi Stalin in some comedy films and we know he does not act that well. But, in this film, because he is blind and his eyes are covered, it is a lot easier for him to act and this time I saw some sincere acting on display. He did give his best shot here and we can see it. Rajkumar Pitchumani as Angoolimala has a one-note expression throughout the film. But, his body language was on-point. So, not a problem. Nithya Menon gets a good role and she makes use of it very well. She is really pessimistic as we observe her fighting with Vasantha, a person who believes in God. But, the best performance of the film belongs to Aditi Rao Hydari as Daahini. She gets to show her acting chops here as she is scared and also very brave. She is hopeful yet very hopeless. But, in the end she gives the best performance of the film. The supporting cast of the film deliver accordingly.
The technical aspects of the film speak more about the film than the actors. The cinematography is very imaginative and unique. Basically, the Mysskin touches affect the cinematography the most. It is treat to watch some unimaginable angles in display. This film knows when exactly to show violence and when exactly not. This is why this film in some scenes sends shivers down our spine. The editing of the film too is very good. Especially in some scenes, the cuts become so essential that they risen up the intensity of the scenes. The songs by Ilayaraaja are soothing as always. The BGM is signature Ilayaraaja. Carnatic music blended well into the thriller mould. I really liked the BGM. The artwork of the film is really good. The sets of the film are terrific especially the slaughtering areas which look really horrifying. The backgrounds of the film are scenic yet scary at the same time.
Overall, I would highly suggest you watch this film. It has some good intensity and tension throughout the film. It is a treat for Mysskin fans. The visuals of the film are a real treat and thriller lovers will absolutely love it. Make your mind as it will be long. If that is done enjoy this film on Netflix.
