Anime Week - Part 2 - Spirited Away (2001) Movie Review

As Anime Week continues, I watched Spirited Away today. I was constantly recommended this film whenever the discussion of anime comes along. This is because it is the only anime film to win an academy award for best animation in 2001. Also, this is the highest grossing Japanese film till date. Also, it is regarded one of the best movies ever made. So, this is hype around me. I tried to keep it away from me as it might hamper my honest opinion. So, here is my honest and unbiased review of Spirited Away:
Spirited Away is a 2001 Japanese anime film directed by the legend himself, Hayao Miyazaki under the illustrious Studio Ghibli banner. The story revolves Chihiro who lands herself in a mysterious place after a wrong turn. When disaster struck for her in that place, she tries to cope with it and finally taste success.

When we talk about Studio Ghibli, we always say that it is the best animation studio in Japan. I too agree with it. The writing of the film is absolutely sensational. In 2 hours of this film, the director tells us so much by showing us so little. We get straight into business from the opening of the film and get ourselves introduced to this weird but fascinating world. I am always a fan of such world-building where it is rich with Japanese culture and traditions. Also, it discusses capitalism and its effects in a very unconventional way. It also points fingers over greed and how it is not good. So, overall this film is both creative and philosophical. The characterisations in the film are very interesting. You have a very kind and helping Chihiro alongside Haku, her love and strong support. We have two twins Yubaba and Zeniba who believe in magic and are the piece of the whole. Also, there are no such bad characters in the film which makes this film very real. So, overall this story under Hayao Miyazaki is truly magical.

The animation is done in 2001. But, yet it never aged. That is the power of traditional 2D animation. These drawings last forever. This film takes advantage of the medium to create some wonderful characters. When we enter the film, the film shows the usual Studio Ghibli style Japan town which is already beautiful but when we enter the main location of the film, that's where things change. It is an out of the world experience. The backgrounds of the film are rocking. It is immersive and very creative. The character design of the film is very good. The animators of the film really had a good time playing with these characters. They are stunning and also with the budget, no two characters are the same. Each character has its own movement, style and elegance. Finally, this film is a visual masterpiece that deserves all of its praise.

Overall, I am becoming a fan of anime movies now. Yes, I watched Doraemon and Shinchan on TV but these films are very high on concept and are executed perfectly. I repeat not over, not under just perfect. Maybe, it may not stick to some audience as it maybe slow for them but if you are waiting for some good films, I would highly recommend you watch it. Enjoy this film on Netflix. All Studio Ghibli films are in Netflix.
