Ready Or Not (2019) Movie Review

The new OTT Disney+Hotstar offered Ready or Not today in the Premium subscription. I curious about the film took a quick look at the synopsis and hopped to watch the film. So, how is the film? Note that I am watching this film without looking the trailer and without any prior knowledge expect for the synopsis.
Ready Or Not is dark comedy horror thriller starring Samara Weavings, Adam Brody, Andie McDowell, Mark O Brian among others and directed by Matt Bettinelli Olpen and Tyler Gillett. The story revolves around Grace who marries Alex. Their family is rich. Grace is happy but she has to escape them because of Hide and Seek. Sounds crazy right. Yeah, this film is the craziest film I have seen this year.

The screenplay is soo... good. First of all, the morbid sense of humour this film possesses is funny(if you get them). The characters themselves are crazy AF. They can viewed either way. They are a family who want to protect themselves from an impending doom but in that process become psychopaths where they already killed a bunch of people. So, there is good and there is bad. The leading lady is the nice one but when death approaches she becomes the Hollywood Revolver Rani. Watch out for the crazy climax where bodies literally explode. Keeping the crazy shit aside, the attention to detail the writers and director give to the sets, costumes are commendable. The dialogues get a special mention. Some one-liners in the film are out-standing. Speaking of one-liners, the film with all these aspects is nothing short of a crazy commercial entertainer. If you don't like movies with excess gore in it, you better skip this one. This film is not meant for you.

The acting in the film is fantastic as each character gets unique character traits. First of, the lead lady Samara Weavings. She looked beautiful and had a very charming smile in the first 10-20 minutes, but after that her acting becomes insane and entertaining. She is a future star in making for Hollywood. Mark O Brian has the simplest but important role of the loving brother and husband who tries to help Grace get out of it from the get go. His acting is very good. Adam Brody gets a very complex role in the film where he is torn between his morals and his family when he is asked to kill Grace. His acting too is really good. We can feel it. Andie McDowell as the emotional mother stuck in the ritual not able to come out of it is commendable in her part. Now, let's go to the crazy part. Melanie Scrofano has the most fun as she delivers a very insanely funny performance. Nicky Guadagni, John Ralston,Henry Czerny, Kristian Brunn as the core of the family terrify you but also make you laugh. These guys play with the insane characters given to them.

The technical aspects also shine immensely in the film. The song choices made for the film are very good. I am actually looping them after I finish writing this review. The cinematography is very well done every frame oozes out zaniness. The editing is very sharp. The film is racy and grips you until the end. The art direction of the film is the heart and soul of the film. The set decorations and colour palette chosen really help bring out the environment of the film.

Overall, this film is not for everyone. If you like films with excess gore and crazy things happening, this film is for you. It was right up my alley. You cannot expect deep storytelling from the film but definitely it will entertain you till the end. Make sure any 5 year old is not watching this film because if they watch this film, they may start shooting(You will get it if you watch the film.)
