My Spy (2020) Movie Review

When I went to watch Bheeshma in Cinepolis: Manjeera Mall, I watched the trailer for this film, My Spy. I liked the trailer and the idea of a nine-year old Spy. I thought to watch it on theatres but this so-called pandemic swept all theatres away. So, after it's release in the VOD I watched it today. How is the film? Let's find out.
My Spy is a supposed April release but a VOD-released Family Action Comedy directed by Peter Segal starring Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman,Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong in lead roles. The story revolves around JJ, a hard-exterior low EQ Spy who meets Sophie by events and how their relationship evolves makes for the rest of the movie. There is a sub-plot about CIA getting this criminal.

The screenplay has mixed aspects in it. Let us begin with the positive aspects. The section of the film where the relation between Sophie and JJ builds is very good. These scenes have decent charm and some good heart. The satire it throws on certain action movie staples such as explosions behind or the intro scene where they make jokes about the Russian accent of the lead work well. A twist in between the 2nd act and climax surprised me. The humour works well in parts. Some dialogue in the film are really hilarious. So, now let's get into some negatives. First of all, for a film whose title is My Spy, the Spy stuff is just a side-plot. That is not what I thought when I saw the trailer. There are parts where the makers try low-brow humour such as vomit, farts etc. They are unnecessary. The film's screenplay pattern is easily predictable excluding that twist. The film also tries to be trendy and cool sometimes with its referneces but it leaves a sour taste. Perhaps that is the reason why satire was involved. The climax of the film is good but there is one shot which is extremely similar to the Balakrishna starrer Vijayendra Varma where the hero shot the tyre of an aeroplane. The difference is that JJ cuts the tyre with a knife sliding down the aeroplane. When we troll NBK for that scene, what should we do for this scene???? Overall, this film is the froth of a well made Delgano Coffee. Smooth texture and taste but still it is a froth.

The acting of the film is decent. Dave Bautista is the perfect choice for the role of JJ. As we all know, he worked in the Guardians of the Galaxy Franchise, so all Marvel fans know he acts well. He delivers here too. Pulling off the hard-exterior not fit to be a spy with such ease. What's up with wrestlers being actors? They bring such nice charm to their characters no matter how bad they are. Chloe Coleman does a good job as the 9 year old Sophie. Perhaps, she would need more homework in acting as sometimes she is off. But, when she did act well, the scenes worked. The chemistry she shared with Dave Bautista brings the heart of the film and remains a strong pillar for the entire film to stand on. In smaller roles, Kristen Schaal is good as Bobby, JJ's partner. She has some nice lines to work with. Devere Rogers and Noah Dalton Dannby perform well and have a great moment to shine in that twist. Overall, the acting is decent.

The film shows its budget. So, all the technical departments work with it. All aspects emulate a quintessential family film.

Overall, I would like to conclude by saying that you can actually give it a try. Sure, it has a predictable screenplay and there is a little spy stuff. But, finding family films has become a hardship nowadays. So, if you wanna watch a film with your family or want to have a pleasant time, you can watch this film for its good humour.
