90ML (2019) Movie Review

A movie which is based on an syndrome or disorder (HEARD IT BEFORE!!!). This was supposed to be a formula for maruthi but Karthikeya, a rising actor who is trying really hard with the scripts he is choosing but is failing due to its direction took a dig into it. Does he succeed in familiarizing Fatal Alcohic Disorder or is it another failed attempt? Let's find out

90ML is a mass masala comedy drama entertainer directed by Shekhar Reddy Yarra starring Karthikeya, Neha Solanki and Rao Ramesh in lead roles. The story revolves around Devadas ( YEP, THAT REFERENCE) who suffers from Fatal Alcoholic Disorder due to a series of events and how he convinces a family of alcohol haters to make him marry their daughter despite big roadblocks.

The story is interesting and the director also adds characters of good substance in the film to elevate it a few notches higher. The lead character itself is a generic mass hero who carries the whole film on his shoulders with his dancing, fighting and acting. Karthikeya also does a fine job of doing this act with ease. This character is well placed for us to understand the different characters of the movie well. Let's start with the heroine's family. The father(Rao Ramesh) is a traffic police and is the normal person in this family. The wife is a housewife but is an expert in Kalaripayattu, the martial arts in India which originates from Kerala. The elder daughter is a physiotherapist who also knows how to lock body parts(WATCH THE FILM TO UNDERSTAND). The younger daughter is a kung fu black belt holder and is very angry. They call themselves with unique respect which is uncommon and mainly to bring the conflict in the movie, they hate alcohol. The villain in the movie is a roadblock, just to serve some respect otherwise he's just mere comic relief in the film. There's genuine fun with how the villain(NAMED JOHN WICK!!!!) asks why the hero just kick his ass. His henchmen also provide some good laughs as the hero or the heroine and her family kick their ass. The mother and father of the hero too share some fun as they call Sairam to each other.

That's where the good part ends. The first half is just introducing these characters, establishing the story and having fun with it. But, when the story arrives, the movie drags. The second half is a solid proof for this. The conflict shown is so simple that if the hero gives a lecture for 5 minutes, it should be solved. But, for no reason the heroine just yells at the hero and the hero remains silent and repeat. This happens almost till the end of the movie sprinkled with some of the bottom of the barrel villain stuff. So, some inventive stuff just gets diluted(JUST LIKE 90ML ALCOHOL IN 1000L WATER) into regular format commercial film.

The technical aspects re mixed too. Anup Ruben's music is decent with Single Single Seetharani being the best of the lot. BGM is very lacklustre though. Cinematography of the movie is good and makes the movie look rich. Editing is lacklustre but the director is responsible for this. Production values too are medium. The Dance numbers of the movie are the highlights of the film as far as I am concerned. Karthikeya and the choreographers have given a very good video song album.

Overall, the film is mixed bag with good acting from the lead cast and good comedy from the first half but fails in the second half due to the director's vision of making a format commercial film despite its inventive characters. It's a good watch on TV and will definitely pass your time.
